Self-Employed Tax Returns in Ontario

If you run a business, own rental properties, or earn income outside of a regular T4, your tax return is anything but straightforward. I'm Sasa Misic, CPA, CMA, and I work exclusively with self-employed business owners and entrepreneurs who need a real professional in their corner. My self-employed tax returns in Ontario are built for people with business income, complex deductions, and a lot more to lose from a filing error than the average T4 filer.

Self-Employed Accounting in Ontario

This Is Not Basic Personal Tax Preparation

There is a significant difference between a standard personal tax return and the kind of filing a self-employed business owner actually needs. I do not accept T4-only returns. My focus is entirely on entrepreneurs, freelancers, and small business owners who have business income, rental income, or other complex tax situations that require a CPA's scrutiny. Personal tax for entrepreneurs means understanding your business structure, maximising legitimate deductions, and ensuring your filing holds up if the CRA ever comes knocking. That is the level of care I bring to every file I take on.

What I Handle for You

Freelancer Tax Services Built Around Your Business Income

Filing a T1 general tax return when you have self-employment income, rental properties, or a mix of both requires more than plugging numbers into software. I prepare and file personal income tax returns for self-employed individuals across Ontario, including those in Kitchener, Cambridge, Waterloo, Guelph, and beyond, as well as remote clients across Canada outside of Quebec. My work covers income from business operations, rental properties, and other non-T4 sources. I review your deductions against current tax law, assess your business structure, and make sure your return reflects the full picture of your financial situation accurately.

Why It Matters Who Files Your Return

A CPA Who Understands the Entrepreneur's Tax Situation

Many self-employed owners have been burned by low-cost preparers who missed deductions, filed incorrectly, or left them exposed to CRA scrutiny. My background in commercial banking, credit, and accounting gives me a well-rounded perspective on how your business operates, not just how to fill out a form. I work with every client directly. There are no junior handoffs and no one else reviewing your file. When I assess your self-employed accounting situation, I am looking at the full picture: your income, your structure, your deductions, and your exposure. That is the standard I hold myself to on every return I prepare.

Who This Service Is For

Self-Employed Individuals with Real Tax Complexity

This service is the right fit if you are a freelancer, contractor, sole proprietor, or small business owner filing personal income tax with business income attached. It is also built for owners of rental properties who need accurate income and expense reporting on their T1 general tax return. If you have been managing your own filing and are not confident that everything is optimised, or if you have had a difficult experience with a previous preparer, I am selective about who I take on, and I treat every client's file with the same level of attention I would want applied to my own.

Common Questions

What Self-Employed Clients Ask Me

  • Do you file personal tax returns for people who only have T4 income?

No. My self-employed tax return service is strictly for individuals with business income, rental income, or other complex tax situations that go beyond a standard T4 filing. If your only income source is employment income from a single employer, this service is not the right fit. I work exclusively with entrepreneurs, freelancers, contractors, and rental property owners who need a CPA's level of care applied to their personal income tax return.
  • What types of income do you handle on a self-employed personal tax return?

I handle personal income tax returns that include self-employment income from a business or freelance work, rental income from properties you own, and other non-T4 income sources that require careful reporting. If you have a mix of these income types, I assess the full picture to make sure your T1 general tax return is filed accurately and that all legitimate deductions are applied correctly under current Canadian tax law.
  • Can you help if I have unfiled tax returns from previous years?

Yes. Managing back taxes is part of the work I do for self-employed individuals. If you have missed filing deadlines or have returns from prior years that were never submitted, I can help get your tax situation back on track. Addressing unfiled returns promptly is important to avoid compounding penalties and interest from the CRA. I take direct ownership of the process and handle CRA communication on your behalf where needed.
  • Do you provide CRA representation if my return is reviewed or audited?

Yes. CRA representation is part of the service I provide. If the CRA reviews, questions, or audits a return I have prepared, I deal with them directly. You do not have to navigate that process on your own. Having the same professional who prepared your return also handle any CRA correspondence is one of the key advantages of working with a sole practitioner CPA rather than a larger firm where your file may have passed through multiple hands.
  • Is this service available to self-employed clients outside of Kitchener and Waterloo Region?

Yes. I serve self-employed clients across Ontario, including Kitchener, Cambridge, Waterloo, Guelph, Hamilton, and many other communities, as well as remote clients anywhere in Canada outside of Quebec. All work is conducted remotely, so your location within Canada does not limit your access to CPA-level self-employed accounting. Quebec is the only province I do not serve.
  • How is your service different from using tax software on my own?

Tax software can process numbers, but it cannot assess whether your business structure is optimised, identify deductions you may not know you qualify for, or flag exposures that could attract CRA attention. As a CPA with a background in commercial banking and credit, I bring a broader perspective to your filing than any software tool can provide. I review your situation as a whole, not just the data you enter into a form, and I take personal responsibility for the accuracy of every return I prepare.
  • What happens during the initial Accounting Assessment?

The Accounting Assessment is the structured first step I use to evaluate whether my services are a good fit for your situation. It is not a free advice session where I work through your tax return on the spot. Instead, I learn about your business, your income sources, your current filing history, and your goals. From there, I determine whether I can provide the level of service your situation requires. I am selective about the clients I take on, so this step ensures the relationship makes sense for both of us before any work begins.
